In the past, professional services technology systems were closely tied to ERP systems, sometimes baked right in, sometimes as a third party product. The common practice was to utilize the ERP’s architecture, database and financial modules to create a full-featured financial project management system that could produce very granular financial metrics. Requirements are an essential part of any software project and the foundation on which all projects should be built. The gathering of and compiling of requirements for a software project is very much a partnership between the user of the software and the developer. Obviously the customer or software user needs to communicate to the developer what they need, but at the same time the developer needs to be able to anticipate needs and ask the right questions during the requirements gathering phase of a project.
So, its 4pm on Thursday and you’re having an issue with payroll in GP. You’re not sweating it because you know that you have an amazing VAR who is going to get this all straightened out for you. You call in and get your consultant on the phone and they tell you they are going to use RDP to get on your machine and see what the problem is. You sit there confused but not wanting to let them know that you have no idea what’s happening. A million thoughts race through your head… “What’s RDP? Should I have this? Do I need it? Why don’t I know?”
What am I doing? The same thing I have always done? The same thing that hasn’t given me the results that I wanted, that hasn’t helped me hit my goals?
These are the questions businesses are asking themselves all the time. They know what they are doing, they know it’s not working, but they don’t know how to change it. And in the world with budgets, time restraints, managers and employees to answer to the idea of changing what you are doing to get better results can leave you stagnant while you figure out what exactly it is you need to change.
