Five Tips on Understanding SQL Server Better

Being a developer I often find myself in situations where I need to troubleshoot SQL queries that are not performing well and generally need optimizations. I would like to share some interesting tips on how SQL Server handles queries and what execution plans might be better than others. A query execution plan is an ordered set of steps that are used to access the data in SQL server. If you are working with SQL Server Management Studio once you have started a new query window click the following button (or CTRL + M) so you can enable execution plans. In the examples below I will be using tables from AdventureWorks database which is a sample database provided by Microsoft.

Taking Advantage of the PaperSave Worklow

In November of last year, I wrote a blog about a Document Management system called PaperSave. The PaperSave document management system captures and stores documents electronically from varying drop points, routes the document through a workflow, and can upload a document directly into Dynamics GP. At that time, PaperSave had recently introduced version 6.0 of their software, which provides additional functionality to the end user through Email drop points, browser based interfaces, and a full mobile solution for workflow routings.

Disposal of a Fixed Asset in Acumatica Cloud ERP

There are usually two cases in which you would write-off an asset from your accounting books. As I’m sure we have all experienced, hard drives crash and laptops and desktop computers become more useful as paperweights than office equipment. In this instance, the asset is donated or placed in the “circular file” for disposal with no resale market value. This is probably the most common scenario. To remove the asset from your accounting records, you would normally have to create an adjusting journal entry that removes the accumulated depreciation and the original acquisition cost. If the asset is fully depreciated, then the entry is fairly straightforward.

Marriage Counseling between Sales and Marketing

I was extremely fortunate to have KTL send me down to Atlanta, Georgia for one of Microsoft’s largest conferences, Convergence. Here I was able to really understand concepts involving both marketing and sales that pertained to us as partners using the solutions we not only implement and sell, but use in house as well. My knowledge grew with many of the sessions provided, but one stood out from others. Not because it was more technical or that I learned something specific that I have been wanting to learn more about; it was that this particular session put a retrospect on what KTL’s Director of Sales and I deal with on an everyday basis: the connection and dependence between our two departments.

Converting Purchases to Fixed Assets in Acumatica Cloud ERP

Acumatica Cloud ERP is one of the many ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems that contain a fixed asset module as part of the application. Having an integrated fixed asset module automates the management of a company’s fixed assets. The automation of this allows an organization to dump their convoluted Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet or Microsoft Access Database for managing the fixed asset process. Using a spreadsheet or database to manage your fixed still leaves you with making journal entries to record monthly depreciation expense and disposal of assets when they are sold or retired. You are also subject to errors during data entry not only of the journal entry itself, but also of the initial setup of the asset in the spreadsheet or database.
